It wasn’t the eight gold medals that Phelps won in 7 world records and one Olympic record or the three world records that Usain Bolt took home…with ease…that impressed IOC president Jacques Rogge the most. It was two air pistol shooting female athletes that were not aiming for each other despite the fact that their countrymen and women were.
Gold medalist Nino Salukvadze of Georgia embraced runner-up Natalia Paderina of Russia after their event even as Paderina’s Russia had attacked her country with real guns that fire real bullets that hurt.
“That kind of sportsmanship is really remarkable,” Rogge said.
Why can’t we all just get along?
